Prep Assignment:
In preparation for your creative work, please provide the following information
on a single page: 1) the name of at least one literary influence, along with titles of specific works
you have read, 2) at least one key symbol/metaphor you plan to use, 3) your working title(s), 4) a
description of your theme(s) in as little as one sentence, 5) three features you are borrowing or
simulating from your influencer’s work.
- Walt Whitman, I saw in Louisiana a live-oak growing
- The symbol I plan to use is the kite. Grow up is like a flying kite, rising slowly with the wind and flying freely in the blue sky. But at the same time, the kite is alone.
- My working title is Lonely.
- Theme: The more you grow up, the more lonely you will be.
Whitman uses the oak that he meets in Louisiana to reflect his own similar qualities which I will borrow it to use a subject to reflect the poem or myself.
The poem describes that “Without any companion it grew there uttering joyous leaves of dark green”, and the poet uses the personification to describe the oak tree which is giving the leaves a human quality by saying they are uttering. And I will also use such personification or other rhetoric methods to describe the detail of the poem.
In the whole poem, it describes how the oak growing without any companion even Whitman can’t server like that. I will simulate the idea with ourselves. Because during our growth, almost all people are alone. And as we grow up, we will be more lonely.
